Reading Rescue, June 2009:
Latest Fiction Bestsellers
By Anne Allen and Mary Anne Fulmer
Hooray! The lazy, crazy days of summer are finally here.
It is time to sit back, enjoy the warm breezes, and read a good book.
This month your Reading Rescuers will review some of the latest
bestsellers.
Mary Balogh's, Seducing an Angel, (FIC BALOGH) is
a love story that will help you relax and enjoy a great read. In this
book Lady Paget, Cassandra, is rumored to have axe-murdered her husband.
Of course, her stepson cuts off all her funds. What can she do to keep
herself, her household of misfits, and a dilapidated dog? She resorts to
the only job she can get. Cassandra becomes a "kept woman". This leads
to many problems. She and her hand-picked partner have sex way too soon
and now have to deal with it. He wants real intimacy, and she is not
capable of providing it. What will happen? Can the relationship survive?
Another good romance book is Debbie Macomber's,
Summer on Blossom Street (FIC MACOMBER). This is another installment
of the Blossom Street Series and as always, a book that will make all
Macomber fans very happy. It is a page-turner and a good, easy,
uplifting novel. The story begins in Lydia and Margaret's store, A Good
Yarn. The ladies offer a class called Knit to Quit. It is a class for
those who need to redirect their energies. Hutch is taking the class
because his doctor suggested it. He hits it off with Phoebe, who is
trying to quit obsessing over a broken engagement. Bryan, a stressed out
young man heading for a heart attack is also attracted to Phoebe.
Macomber does a magnificent job handling several story lines filled with
emotional stress and yet again comes up with a happy ending. Macomber's
novels will help you relax, maybe shed a tear or two, but will always
make you smile over the happy endings.
Want a little change of pace but still maybe a little
romance? Danielle Steel's, Matters of the Heart, (FIC STEEL)
might be just the right book for you. Steel's book has the theme of a
woman isolated and in danger but so blinded by love that she has a real
problem wanting to escape. No other author has the razor-sharp insight
to deliver such an unforgettable tale of danger and obsessive love.
Would you care for a book that is just for a lazy summer
day? Diana Palmer's, Heartless, (FIC PALMER) might be just that
book. Jason is Gracie's step-brother. She hasn't seen him for years, but
he comes back home after the death of Gracie's mother. He wants to make
sure that she is being taken care for but is in for a shock when he
finds she is all grown up. Jason soon realizes that he is falling for
Gracie. Unfortunately, Gracie harbors a shameful secret that makes her
deeply afraid to love. He believes that she is rejecting him and decides
to leave. What will happen? Will she overcome her fear?
Finally, Robert Parker's, Brimstone, (FIC PARKER)
is a continuation of his last two novels, Resolution and
Appaloosa. Virgil and Everett are back. In the last book they were
in the town of Resolution. It is now a year later and Virgil is
searching for Allie. She stole his heart and left town with another man.
They find her in a small-town brothel. Her spirit has been crushed. So
much has happened, and Virgil and Everett take her with them to
Brimstone. Allie finds redemption through a local church and Brother
Percival, but Virgil can't face the fact of what Allie had been forced
to do to survive. Virgil and Everett become deputies in Brimstone, and
it isn't long before Brother Percival stirs up trouble! It all leads to
violence and finally to murder. See what happens.
Enjoy this beautiful time of year, and make it a little
better by reading a great book. As always if you have questions or
comments, please either e-mail mfulmer@pennlib.org or phone (724) 744-4414.
Please don't forget to sign-up for Summer Reading. There
are some magnificent programs and a great party at the end. Just come
into the library to register and receive some prizes just for signing-
up.
On July 9th at 6:00 pm there will be an adult program at
the library. It is the One Book, One Community Program featuring
Franklin Toker's, Fallingwater Rising. The book will be available
in the library. On the 9th we will meet and discuss the book. If you
participate in the program, a trip is planned to Fallingwater and Duncan
House. The trip is free, but if you would like lunch, the cost is $15.00
and it will be served at Duncan House. This program is available through
a grant from the Westmoreland Library Network (WLN). The program will be
fun, and it is a good way to talk to many people about a good book.
See you in the library.
