Reading Rescue, December 2009:
Christmas Books
By Anne Allen and Mary Anne Fulmer
Christmas is the best time of the year! There are always
some great books written about the holiday season. Some books restore
faith, others tell great love stories, while others give you a feeling
of great joy. One book that will make you smile is The Christmas
Secret by Donna Van Liere (FIC VANLIERE). This book is for anyone
who wants to see how love is a gift that keeps giving back and that hope
never runs out. If I had to rate this book, it would receive five stars.
You will really enjoy it!
An Amish Christmas is a book containing three
novellas written by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller and Barbara Cameron (FIC
AMISH CHRISTMAS). Kathleen Fuller's, A Miracle for Mariam, is
about a young Amish woman whose confidence has been shattered by her
friend Seth. He had called her "plain" and she can't see that beauty
comes from within. Seth returns and tries to come back into her life.
Can she believe that she is beautiful to him?
Beth Wiseman's, A Choice to Forgive, tells the
story of Lydia. Lydia had been in love with Daniel, and he chose to
leave the Amish community. He disappears on Christmas Eve, and she is
shattered. As time goes on, she turns to Daniel's brother. They marry
and have a family. He dies very young, and Lydia is alone again. Daniel
returns and asks for forgiveness. Will she forgive him and return his
love?
Over two thousand years ago one child changed the world
forever. Now, on a snowy Christmas Eve night another child is born. Can
he change the world for two different couples? Find out by reading
Barbara Cameron's One Child.
When you are in a sentimental mood there is nothing like
a Richard Paul Evans book. There is always a little moral lesson
attached in these stories. The Christmas List, (FIC EVANS), is a
story about a man who hasn't led a very exemplary life. He gets to read
his own obituary and also to read comments posted on the Internet by his
friends about his life. The man is forced to see how he has hurt many
people that he loved including himself. He goes through a drastic
redemption. The story reminded me of one of my favorite books A
Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This is a good Christmas book,
and I promise you will enjoy it!
Christmas restores our faith and hopes. Kaitlyn
Dunnett's, A Wee Christmas Homicide (FIC DUNNETT), is about a
town that has lost hope. The merchants in the town aren't willing to
give up without a fight and start selling "tiny teddies." They become
very popular and scare. We all know what happens when items get scarce.
Someone gets very greedy. Customers flock to the town and one merchant
decides to keep raising his prices. Of course, he is murdered and the
list of suspects is immense. It even includes his ex-wife. Who did it?
Is the town saved? This is a fast paced and very enjoyable book.
Lori Copeland's, A Christmas Lamp, (FIC
COPELAND), is also about a town that is dying. They need something to
bring back the spark of life. Can tradition and the love of Christmas do
the trick? Find out by reading this wonderful Christmas story.
Christmas is the season of miracles. Myra Johnson's,
One Imperfect Christmas, (FIC JOHNSON) is about a miracle that
needed a helping hand. Guilt can cause so many problems, especially if
you can't get over it. Natalie's mother has a massive stroke while
taking down Christmas decorations. She had asked Natalie for some help
but she had been too busy. She, of course, blames herself for her
mother's stroke. Natalie goes through a lot. Can she forgive herself and
remember that Christmas is about love, faith and forgiveness?
There are so many new and also favorites by some of the
best authors such as Andrew Greeley, Susan Wiggs, Anne Perry and more in
the library. Also, there are some wonderful DVDs and plenty of audio
books including Debbie Macomber's, Mrs. Miracle (CD MACOMBER).
Please be sure to take some time to relax and enjoy the Holidays with a
book, audio book or DVD.
As the year ends it is the time to thank the wonderful
